What to Expect on Your Cystoscopy

If you have visited Urology in Tucson, Arizona, you may have heard about cystoscopy. This is where your urologist uses a scope to see the inside of the urethra and the bladder to diagnose and treat problems with the urinary tract.

Cystoscopy is recommended for people who experience bladder control issues such as the inability to empty the bladder all the way (urinary retention) or the inability to control the flow of urine (incontinence). It is also recommended for those with bladder stones or when blood is seen in the urine.

There are two types of this procedure and we will walk you through which one is more appropriate for your condition. Rigid cystoscopes do not bend and instruments may be passed through the tube to remove tumors or perform biopsies. Flexible scopes are for diagnosis as it enables to examine the inside of the bladder and urethra.

Based on the reason for your cystoscopy, you can be an outpatient, or you may stay the night at the hospital. For diagnostic cases, your doctor generally uses numbing gel to avoid feeling pain in the urethra. For more invasive procedures, general anesthesia or sedation may be applied.

Your healthcare provider will discuss specific instructions before and after the procedure. Learn more about Men’s Health in Arizona at Choi Urology.
