Stages of bladder cancer

The American Cancer Society describes bladder cancer as the abnormal development of cells in the bladder. It is relatively rare cancer that usually accounts for only 5% of new cancer cases in the US.

Urothelial carcinoma (transitional cell carcinoma) is the most common type of bladder cancer. This affects the urothelial cells that line the various parts of the urinary tract, particularly the renal pelvis, the ureters, and the urethra.

This and all other forms of bladder cancer fall under two categories:
Invasive
This type grows into the deep tissue of the bladder wall. It is harder to treat and more likely to metastasize (spread to other parts of the body).
Non-Invasive
This type only affects the transitional epithelium, or inner layer of the cells. It does not grow into the deeper layers of tissue.

Bladder cancer manifests the following symptoms:

  • Lower back pain
  • Loss of appetite
  • Pain in the bones
  • Urinary urgency
  • Pain during urination
  • Occasional blood in the urine
  • Changes in the color of urine
  • Swollen feet

These symptoms may only indicate the presence of other disorders. Nonetheless, you should consult a specialist. Regular screening is necessary to detect the development of bladder cancer. The success of treatment often depends on early detection and sustained medical intervention.
